The Sandwich

“If more of us valued food and cheer above hoarded gold, it would be a much merrier world." - J.R.R. Tolkien

If you were to ask someone what they think man's greatest discovery is you might find some common answers. For example a few of us might say that the discovery of the wheel, or the atom was man's greatest achievement. However, I personally disagree with this, although man has made use of his genius by finding such things, I think it was the discovery of the sandwich that truly holds the title for man's greatest discovery

The sandwich, is such a diverse, creative and flexible food item that it can be changed and shaped to fit anyone's personal desires. Unless you dislike bread you're pretty much set for the rest of your life with the sandwich. I personally think a food item, that can change in such substantial ways is a major part of life. It's the best lunch, snack and appetizer item on the menu and it's wide array of fillings is sure to fit the needs of everyone. Just this afternoon I had a sandwich made with some fine British ham, Italian pastrami and Greek humus. I also added some spinach in for fine measure and created a taste sensation, but enough about my lunch,

Sandwiches have a long history that dates back as far as the 17th Century, which is interesting enough on it's own. However the sandwich dates back even further to the Jewish sage 'Hillel the Elder' who is said to have placed "Lamb and Herbs" between two pieces of flat-bread during Passover. Then, during the middle ages, thick slabs of stale bread, called "Trenchers" were used as plates, before finally being used as the main ingredient for the "open-faced sanwich". Now researching into the sandwich was difficult, there are lots of results suggesting who created the sandwich, and if anyone knows, feel free to tell me. One thing is for sure though, whoever discovered this fantastic specimen of food, was certainly a genius, an innovative beautiful human being.

All in all, I feel that the sandwich represents life perfectly. Just think about it. Your life starts at birth and ends at death, essentially the bread of the sandwich, and throughout the journey millions and millions of things happen to us, some great  and some terrible, just like the ingredients put in between those slices. On their own these events can be meaningless, forgettable even, sometime they can be grand and beautiful, but when mixed together and viewed as a complete package, our lives, in retrospect, seem quite spectacular. Just like the sandwich.
